Southern Butter Rolls

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions

  • 1 Mix together flour, sugar, salt and instant yeast.
  • 2 Mix in Shortening.
  • 3 Mix in Water.
  • 4 Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead by hand for 20 minutes.
  • 5 Cover dough with vegetable oil, cover and let rise for one hour.
  • 6 Form 24 smooth round rolls and place in greased 13x9 baking pan.
  • 7 Let rise again for 45 minutes.
  • 8 Bake at 400 degrees for 12 to 14 minutes.
